Social Studies Education 7-12, Teaching History, and Education Leadership and Policy

Dr. Serure teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in history and social studies education. Her research has focused on understanding the current state of social studies in Western New York and civics education, in which she presented her work Dueling Partners: History and Civics Compete in Social Studies Classrooms at the first annual Civic Summit held at SUNY Buffalo State College in 2020.

Currently, she serves as the Education Leader for the Western Regional chapter of Consider the Source, an online primary document platform supported by the New York State Archives Partnership Trust. She is also active at the state-level for the New York State Council for the Social Studies by participating on the technology and cultural education committees.   

Dr. Serure recent presentations include Ditch the Lecture and Pre-service Teachers’ Learn about Service-Learning Pedagogy presented at various state and national conferences, including the New York State Council for the Social Studies (NYSCSS), the International Society for the Social Studies (ISSS), and the National Council for History Education (NCHE).

Dr. Serure began her career in education as a Global Studies and Participation in Government classroom teacher. Prior to joining SUNY Buffalo State as a full-time faculty member, she was the lead social studies facilitator at Genesee Valley Educational Partnership and a Staff Development Specialist/Curriculum Coordinator with Erie 2 Cattaraugus-Chautauqua BOCES. As a certified Secondary Social Studies teacher, Dr. Serure has worked across agencies, as well as at the state level, to improve curriculum, instruction, and assessment based on the Social Studies Framework, which was approved by the NYS Board of Regents in April of 2014.
