History is the study of the development of ideas and events that shape the growth of people and institutions.
History majors are prepared for careers in business or government, and for graduate study in history or law. Social Studies Education majors are prepared to teach social studies, including history, in both middle and high schools.
Our Programs
Buffalo State’s history program ensures both knowledge and an understanding of the foundations of the development of humankind, and social studies weaves history, government, world geography, and civics to help students become more well-rounded and globally engaged citizens.

Faculty of Distinction
Our faculty members have always been active scholars and teachers, publishing scholarly works, presenting at professional conferences, and earning grant funding for a wide variety of initiatives. Our faculty has been recognized over the years by winning numerous SUNY and Buffalo State President’s Awards in the areas of scholarship, teaching, and student mentoring.

Chesterton wins Teaching Award
Bridget Maria Chesterton, professor of history, received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at Buffalo State’s 2026 Convocation. Chesterton is now a two-time Chancellor’s Award recipient, having previously received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2016.
